The pilot implementation of a solar-powered water chlorination system is presented. The system generates hypochlorous acid, an effective agent for potable water production, by electrolyzing 0.43 molar sodium chloride solution. The electrolysis cell is a custom design with 800mL capacity. The cell has PMMA (acrylic) laser-cut components and waterjetted titanium electrodes with anti-corrosion features. The cell produces enough hypochlorite in one hour to disinfect up to 1500 liters of clear surface water. Successful laboratory tests led to pilot implementation in rural Guyana, South America. Three water chlorination systems were installed and local leaders were trained to operate the systems. System operation involves: charging a standard 12V battery; mixing the NaCl solution; performing the electrolysis; storing the resulting hypochlorous acid in single-dose size bottles; distributing the hypochlorous acid to families; and dosing the hypochlorous acid into drinking water containers.  This presentation describes the system and the status of its implementation.
