Numerous investigations have provided evidence for student success in chemistry as a result of participation in Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL). A study was designed to investigate more closely possible reasons for these outcomes. In two fall semesters of a large enrollment general chemistry course, students were randomly assigned to participate in PLTL or some other on-task study activity such as review sessions, self-organized study groups, or tutoring sessions. Achievement was assessed via content exams. Self-concept and attitude to chemistry were assessed at the beginning and end of the semester. Aspects of motivation and attributions regarding success were gathered monthly. These data will help us answer not only �Does PLTL help students?� but additionally �What type of students does PLTL help?�
