During summer 2010, the ACS Examinations Institute conducted a needs assessment survey, which obtained responses from over 1500 chemistry faculty members. A section of the survey asked participants to report familiarity with 13 assessment terms. To build a generic understanding of how chemistry instructors view assessment we have conducted analyses that include factor analysis and structural equation modeling of participant responses. These statistical models afford the exploration of differences between categories of instructors including; institution type, chemistry discipline, years teaching, and sex. Insights from this research are informative for chemical education researchers developing new assessment instruments and communicating assessment data with the broader chemistry community.
