Bacteria found in iron-deficient environments produce ligands called siderophores, which form water-soluble complexes with iron ions and thus aid in iron uptake. Siderophore ligand interactions with hematite-water interfaces are investigated using attenuated total internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). Chelation of Fe3+ by desferrioxamine-B (DFOB) at the hematite-aqueous interface is studied for its relevance to environmental soil chemistry. ATR-IR results provide information on the speciation and surface complexation and dissolution processes for the hematite-aqueous siderophore interface. Second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements of DFOB adsorption rates and thermodynamics at the hematite-water interface are also presented.
