No. 6 fuel is a heavy fuel oil (HFO) that has a relatively high viscosity.  It needs to be pre-heated prior to pumping otherwise it will congeal and clog fuel lines. Its undesirable characteristics result in lower demand thus making it an inexpensive fuel for power plants and ocean going vessels. We have experience in producing stable emulsions of No. 2 fuel in crude glycerin obtained from biodiesel processing, and we are now pursuing emulsions using HFO. These could lead to a lower viscosity fuel compared to No. 6 fuel oil alone and expand the utility of the low cost fuel.  Crude glycerin analysis and characterization remains an essential part of the project, since contaminants in the glycerin vary from source to source and have an effect on emulsion formulations.  This poster will present our results on the formulations and resulting properties of emulsions of No. 6 fuel oil in crude glycerin.
