Although on this planet water is often found in bulk, it is interfacial water that is responsible for a number of applications, including the preservation of artistic heritage. Our research has been designed to synergistically deploy molecular simulations and careful experimental observations towards addressing the following fundamental questions: (A ) how does a solid structure perturb interfacial water? (B ) How far from the solid does this perturbation persist? (C ) What is the rate of water reorientation and exchange in the perturbed layer? (D ) What happens in the presence of simple electrolytes? (E ) How can the structure of interfacial water determine slip length/stick under various experimental conditions? Selected recent results will be presented and critically analyzed towards developing innovating applications including designing new experimental apparatuses to sample interfacial water structure, understanding the relationship between interfacial water properties and hydrodynamic slip, separating simple electrolytes different in size, and deploying electric double layer capacitors.
