The rapid solid-state metathesis (SSM) technique provides a quick and flexible alternative to conventional solid-state materials synthesis.  Our previous studies showed that metal halides form highly crystalline metal oxide materials (e.g., TiO2) through exothermic reactions with sodium peroxide.  Single exchange metathesis reactions between metal halides and volatile phosphorus can also produce porous metal phosphides (e.g., NiP2) in ampoule reactions at temperatures near 500 �C.  This poster will describe combining these metathesis processes to target metal phosphide and sulfide materials.  Depending on the synthetic approach used, these materials have different atomic ratios and structures (e.g, Ni2P and Ni3S2).  Our SSM reactions form fine metal particles from the thermal decomposition of unstable metal nitrides that are then converted to metal phosphide/sulfide products through reaction with red phosphorous, elemental sulfur, or molecular PxSy compounds.  The products formed via this rapid SSM method are compared to related single exchange reactions using ampoule-based methods.
