Removal of chloride from tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)boratonickel(II) chloride, {TpPhNiCl}, using Ag[OTf] in the presence of 1 eq. of tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine, {P(Py)3}, resulted in the formation of the pale purple [TpPhNiP(Py)3][OTf] in a 40% yield.  The cation structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction and showed an octahedral nickel(II) ion coordinated by six nitrogen donors, three from the pyrazolyl groups of TpPh and three from the pyridine rings in P(Py)3 with average bond distances of 2.152(2) and 2.076(2) � respectively.  Addition of 1 eq. of (tetrahydrothiophene)AuCl to this complex resulted in the formation of the purple, bimetallic [TpPhNiP(Py)3AuCl][OTf] in a 70% yield.  X-ray analysis indicates the gold chloride moiety is bound to the octahedral nickel complex through the phosphine atom of P(Py)3 with an Au-P bond distance of 2.2104(4) � and a P-Au-Cl angle of 174.00(2)�.
