By exposure to C60 fullerene, metal carbonyl compounds and their derivatives' structures can be altered. Reaction of dicobalt octacarbonyl, which has three distinct isomers in solution, with C60 fullerene allows for the isolation of the unbridged �D3h isomer. A derivative, Hg{Co(CO)4}2, was synthesized and, upon exposure to C60, co-crystallized in a geometry had not been seen previously. Theoretical computations were done and found that the lowest energy isomer was not isolated as noted earlier for Co2(CO)8. In contrast, when [CpRu(CO)2]2 was exposed to C60,  cleavage of the metal-metal bond and addition occurs forming a unique adduct. Other dimers including those of iron, tungsten, and molybdenum are being investigated. Photolysis reactions were monitored by infrared spectroscopy and the stable products were characterized by single crystal X-Ray diffraction.
