Quantum dots (QDs) have been widely explored for biosensing applications.  We take advantage of the semiconductive properties of the QDs and use the photoelectrochemical response of the QDs film as the analytical signal to determine the analyte adsorbed on the QDs surface.  This provides an effective way to analyze sulfhydryl containing proteins. On the surface, biosensors are used for analytical techniques in determining the concentration of an analyte by conversion of a biological response into an electric signal.  Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) QDs exists uncoordinated Cd2+ and S2-which can selectively adsorb sulfhydryl containing compounds.  CdS are one of the most studied nanocrystalline materials, containing long excitation due to the quatum confinement effect.  In brief, a layer-by-layer technique is used to immobilize CdS QDs by alternating a layer of positively charged poly-diallyldimethylammonium (PDDA) polyelectrolyte onto a negatively charged ITO glass, followed by a layer of negatively charged CdS QDs.  The film is then used to detect levels of cysteine in solution.
