The effect of electroosmotic flow (EOF) attenuation on the separation and detection of explosives from high conductivity sample matrices was studied.  Various EOF modifiers were added to a micelle-containing background electrolyte resulting in a narrowing of the separation window due to anionic micelles moving towards the inlet side of the capillary during injections.  EOF attenuation during the separation resulted in an improved stacking efficiency for neutral analytes with low affinity for micelles.  As the complexity of the sample matrix increased, secondary stacking phenomena were observed.  Sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium cholate micelle systems were studied and EOF was altered through use of buffer additives such as spermine and diaminobutane.  Ultimately, the issues of poor separation efficiency, limited sensitivity, and irreproducibility that arise from direct sampling from seawater were addressed and results are presented herein.
