Hemoglobin based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) have a higher oxygen carrying capacity than the normal hemoglobin, making them a potential blood doping substance among endurance athletes. HBOCs are included in the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List. Our work aims at developing a more effective method to detect HBOCs.We have developed a rapid CZE method to detect HBOCs in blood using UV-VIS detection. Crucially, our method allows for the analysis of the whole blood sample; with a simple sample preparation based on centrifugal filtration. Previously reported methods tested only blood plasma and required the use of complex immunoprecipitations for the sample preparation. Through our method we are able to separate and detect HBOCs below the anticipated doping levels in in vitro doped human whole blood. To further verify the applicability of this method to screen doping, in vivo tests are being performed using doped mouse blood.
