The ability to control the electroosmotic flow (EOF) in capillary electrophoretic separations is essential. While the use of double tailed phospholipids have been shown to provide protection of the capillary surface with the formation of a lipid bilayer, they allow for limited control of the magnitude of the EOF. This work investigates the use of a single tailed surfactant, SDS, as an additive to the 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) phospholipid capillary coating to selectively alter the EOF.This work has shown that the EOF can be tailored with the addition of varying concentrations of SDS into the DLPC mixture. Crucially, the incorporation of SDS into the phospholipid bilayer directly affects the magnitude of the EOF while not disturbing protein separations. We have also found that the stability of the DLPC bilayer is not significantly altered by the incorporation of SDS.
