Hydrolysis of cellulose with sulfuric acid is one of the most prevalent methods for the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals. The yields, however, are generally low, often below 20%. The purpose of this study was to develop response surface models for the prediction of yield and nanoparticle properties for different combinations of hydrolysis parameters. The study tested two experimental designs, a central composite design and a Box-Behnken design. The factors (independent variables) were acid concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time. Response surfaces were generated for yield, sulfate group density (from conductometric titrations), zeta potential, and hydrodynamic diameter. Milled wood pulp was used as the starting material. The yield model predicted yields in excess of 60% for certain hydrolysis conditions. Selected model predictions were experimentally verified.
