Films made from nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were produced from wood (birch) pulps with varying amounts of lignin. Unbleached, oxygen-delignified and fully-bleached pulps with Kappa numbers of 18, 13 and 2, respectively, were used to produce NFC with an overpressure device. The tensile index, elastic modulus and % elongation of films of NFC with same grammage were compared and the effect of lignin accessed. Complementary examination of fiber morphology, water absorbency and surface energy was used to propose a possible explanation about the role of lignin in the production and properties of the resultant NFC films.
