On September 16, 2011, President Obama signed into law sweeping new patent reform.  The 'America Invents Act' (AIA) will bring many changes to the current patent system.  Some changes took effect immediately, while other changes will occur over the next 18 months.  One of the most notable changes is the move from the historical First-to-Invent patent system to a First-Inventor-to-File patent system.  This new system will pressure inventors to file patent applications early, however the requirements for written description and enablement in chemical patent applications continue to become more demanding.   Additionally, the new law creates new proceedings for challenging patents and patent applications.   This presentation will discuss guidelines, thoughts and strategies for how universities are planning to deal with the changes.
