Contemporary smokeless tobacco products (�cSTP�) and a novel subset of cSTP known as dissolvables tobacco products (�DTP�) have attracted much attention not because of their levels of harmful constituents (most always lower than those in the GothiaTek� standard for Swedish snus), but because of levels of potentially harmful constituents and tobacco additives that may create potential harm because they allegedly increase the attractiveness of such products.  Moreover, the proposed US FDA list of harmful and potentially harmful compounds in tobacco products (76 Federal Register  No. 156, 50226-30) includes caffeic acid (rodent carcinogen).  Our initial research has shown that caffeic acid levels in some cSTP may exceed 100 ppm and are product dependent.  Furthermore, we have quantitated levels of volatile compounds in DTP that were previously reported to be at toxic levels (Goodpaster et al., J. Agric. Food Chem.  2011, 59:2745-51) and found them to be well within acceptable limits.
