Directed evolution is a powerful strategy for altering thefunction and properties of enzymes. We describe our combined effortsaimed at improving the utility of combinatorial biosynthesis byreprogramming the biosynthesis of natural products by evolutionarystrategies. Areas of focus include 1) improving the promiscuity oftailoring enzymes which modify natural product scaffolds, 2) improvingthe modularity of biosynthetic machinery, and 3) developing newscreening methods for evolution of enzymes involved in natural productbiosynthesis.
