Cell wall mimetic composite films of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin can be prepared from porous nanocrystalline cellulose (NC) films through a surface initiated polymerization of monolignols.  The NC films are prepared by spincoating from aqueous suspensions.  The adsorption of monolignols, hemicelluloses and horse radish peroxidase to the NC films is studied by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D).  Monolignol adsorption onto regenerated cellulose films is weak and reversible, whereas adsorption is amplified on NC films and some irreversible adsorption occurs.  Likewise, horseradish peroxidase adsorbs irreversibly onto the NC films.  Subsequent dehydrogenative polymerization of monolignols was studied by QCM-D in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The resulting composites are impervious to cellulase activity.
