The anaerobic fermentation of carbohydrates with Saccharomyces Cerevisiae is  commonly used to make carbonated alcoholic beverages for recreational  and industrial purposes. Although this is not an experiment that can be  done with high school students, aerobic fermentation can produce carbon  dioxide, and carbonate non-alcoholic sodas. We propose a lab experiment  where students can do this using knowledge from general chemistry while  making connections to biochemistry and physics. Multiple Michigan  Department of Education standards and NSTA guidelines can be met by this  lab. It also presents opportunity for further research and  investigation by more advanced students.

Fermentation in high school: I hope it doesn't explode!
