Abstract : This study focused on understanding fate and transport of zero valent iron nanoparticles (NZVI) in anaerobic soil and groundwater system. Effects of abiotic and biotic factors on the movement of NZVI were studied. In this case, an enriched anaerobic culture (KB-1) that can reductively dechlorinate trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) to ethylene using methanol as electron donor was introduced. Preliminary batch experiments with sand, TCE, and KB-1 as well as subsequent column tests were performed to obtain NZVI attachment efficiency and deposition rate coefficients, and to develop mathematical models to characterize the fate and transport of NZVI in soil and groundwater system. Chlorinated compounds and ethylene were analyzed with a GC-MS. The phenanthroline complexation method was adopted to determine the total iron concentration. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to track total bacterial and archaeal populations together with key microorganisms such as Dehalococcoides.Key words: NZVI; Fate and transport; Anaerobic reductive dechlorination; qPCR; Continuous flow column.
