Among the problems encountered during electrophilic fluorination of organic compounds are the lack of suitable solvents that are resistant to oxidation by F2 and the decomposition of substrates due to high reactivity of F2. The high dielectric constant, low viscocity, long liquid range and aHF's resistance to oxidation by F2 make it an excellent solvent for direct fluorination using F2. Although aHF has been proven to be a versatile reaction medium for the electrophilc radiofluorination of electron rich aromatic compounds, it is still rarely used for the synthesis of 18F-tracers. This presentation will highlight the advantages of aHF for the synthesis of isomers and enantiomers of [18F]6-fluoro-L-dopa and its use for the regio- and stereo-specifc synthesis of a rare sugar, [18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-�-D-allose.
