This study was conducted to investigate the degradation of pyrene in the presence of cationic surfactant (Cetylpyridinium Chloride, CPC) by pyrite Fenton reaction. Pyrene without CPC showed 60% of sorption to pyrite surface. However, sorption of pyrene to pyrite decreased to 15% in the presence of CPC. Pyrene without CPC was fully degraded in 15 min in pyrite Fenton system at initial pH 7, while degradation of pyrene with CPC was inhibited to 94% due to the competitive consumption of OH radical by CPC and pyrene. The degradation of pyrene with CPC by pyrite Fenton reaction resulted in the transformation to some acids such as 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid and n-octadecanoic acid. These results suggest that pyrite Fenton system can be a novel remediation alternative to treat wastewater containing poly aromatic hydrocarbons and surfactants emitted from soil washing processes.
