Sulfadiazine has been widely used as an antibiotic in pharmaceutical industries. Manganese dioxides have potential for removing contaminants in water or soil due to their active ability to oxidize organic chemicals into small molecules or intermediate to attain larger macromolecule. In this study, d-MnO2 (birnesitte) synthesized by reacting KMnO4 and MnCl2 in NaOH condition after purging the solution with N2 gas and natural MnO2 were used for sulfadiazine removal. The effects of pH, initial sulfadiazine concentration and solution:MnO2 ratio on removal kinetics were investigated The results showed that synthetic birnessite is more efficient than natural MnO2 due to higher surface area. The effect of sulfadiazine species was investigated by controlling the pH at cationic, neutral, and anionic condition. The cationic sulfadiazine was more rapidly removed than the other forms. Mn2+ was detected in the solution phase as a result of MnO2 reduction. Addition of sorbents such as kaolin and montmorillonite accelerated sulfadiazine removal by sorption process. Both synthetic and natural MnO2 removed the sulfadiazine successfully and the removal was improved by the decreasing pH. The coexisting metal ions (Mn2+, Cu2+, and Ca2+) decreased the sulfadiazine removal by inhibiting the interaction between manganese dioxides and sulfadiazine due to sulfadiazine speciation in the solution.
