The co-electroreduction of CO2 and water for the generation of syn-gas is one route to the production of non-petroleum hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals. Unfortunately this route is hindered by the large overpotential for CO2 reduction and the low solubility of CO2 in aqueous systems. Recent advances which have been developed to address these hindrances will be discussed. In particular a prime route to the partial mitigation of the high overpotential is the elevation of the temperature at which the co-reduction takes place. Indeed, a slight elevation in temperature to 70�C results in a 300 mV shift in the cathode potential at 70 mA cm-2. The two-fold approach of using a gas diffusion electrode and elevating the cell operating pressure negates issues with CO2 solubility. Combined, the two provide the opportunity to effectively access current densities which are industrially feasible while improving cell voltages and throughput.
