In this work, the surface structure and reactivity of the well-defined Pt, Ru and various PtRu electrodes towards the adsorption and electro-oxidation of a range of small organic fuel molecules in various electrolyte solutions have been studied by combined ex-situ electron diffraction, in-situ electrochemical FTIR spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory calculations, and the new insight into the surface electrocatalysis has been obtained at atomic and molecular level.
