Metal-air batteries are attractive candidates for energy storage due to their high theoretical energy capacity and utilization of air as an active component.  Several fundamental research challenges remain before commercialization can be realized. These include understanding reaction mechanisms and reducing over potential on the cathode along with minimizing oxidation, morphology changes and chemical reactivity on the anode.  In this presentation we will show recent results of various metal-air systems including intermediate temperature sodium-air, metal hydride-air and novel organic hydride-air. Future research directions based on performance challenges and cycle life will be addressed.
