The Li-O2 battery is generating a great deal of interest because its high theoretical specific energy could transform energy storage. Typically, the non-aqueous Li-O2 battery is composed of a Li metal anode, a porous carbon composite cathode, and an aprotic Li+ ion electrolyte. The cathode active material, oxygen, is accessed from the environment as shown in Fig. 1. The cell is supposed to operate by Li2O2 formation on discharge, with the process being reversed upon charge. 2Li+ + O2 + 2e- ? 2Li2O2 Eo = 2.96 V Although important progress has been made during the past decade, the Li-O2 battery is still far from a practical technology; many scientific and technological challenges need to be overcome.1 One of the most important issues is to understand the fundamental chemical and electrochemical reactions occurring in the Li-O2 battery. We will present in situ and ex situ spectroscopic analyses of different non-aqueous Li-O2 cells and discuss the reactions taking place at the cathode.
