TAML activators are highly functional peroxidase mimics that activate hydrogen peroxide via high valent iron-oxo intermediates to oxidize myriad persistent organic pollutants in water. The catalytic cycles are highly complex involving numerous equilibria and intersecting side reactions. As another step in understanding the full cycle, a well characterized iron(V)oxo complex has been isolated in pure form and its reactivity has been carefully investigated. The results will be discussed. TAML activators have been designed and developed especially with a view to producing more effective chemistry for purifying water of trace quantities of persistent bioactive compounds. Real time toxicity studies to discover if TAML activators are toxic at trace quantities are a key part of the design program and emerging results will be discussed. New results on the use of TAML activators to break down recalcitrant pollutants will be presented.
