Mass independent multi sulfur isotope measurements have been used to trace the origin and evolution of oxygen and life in the Earths earliest record, ca. 3.8 billion years ago until 2.2 Billion years before present. Mass independent multi oxygen isotopic measurements following the snowball earth and the explosion of life between 650-850 million years ago have also been employed to resolve the atmopsheric conditions that existed in this time segment. The specifics of the quantum chemical mechanism responsible for producing these mass independent isotopic compositions has provided details of the origin and evoluion of the atmopshere and life that could not be measured by any other technique.
