2,2,2-Trichloromethylcarbinols are useful synthetic intermediates with many applications in organic chemistry.  Trichloromethylcarbinols are usually prepared from the corresponding aldehydes and ketones under a variety of conditions including TASF /F-, CHCl3/base, Cl3CCO2H, and Cl3C-TMS (trimethyl(trichloromethyl)silane) in the presence of a wide range of catalysts.  Of the above protocols, CCl3-TMS remains the most attractive trichloromethyl source due to its mild reaction conditions.  Here in we describe an improved, one-step in-situ formation of Cl3C-TMS and its application with a variety of aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding trichloromethylcarbinols.
