A biphase approach has been used to prepare novel self-healing materials. The hard cross-linked polystyrene core with ATRP initiators was synthesized by emulsion polymerization, followed by ATRP to grow a shell layer of poly(acetylamonopentyl acrylate) with highly hydrogen-bonding self-healing motifs. The core-shell nanoparticles (PS-PAAPA) could assemble to form bulk materials, which had the self-healing properties at room temperature without the need of any external stimulus.
