Production of polymers with different surface and bulk chemistry is currently accomplished via multiple step processes.  Photo-enforced stratification could produce such films in a single step process by taking advantage of the spatiotemporal control that photopolymerization affords.  Photo-enforced stratification is achieved by co-photopolymerization of monomers with different reactivities in the presence of a light gradient within the film.  The light gradient induces a reaction gradient in which the rate of polymerization is greater at the surface of the film which can result in an enrichment of the preferentially reacting monomer.  Systems will be discussed that allow stratification including mono-ene monomers with different reactivity ratios and formulations with both mono- and di-ene monomers.  Both driving forces have been able to produce films with selective enrichment of the faster reacting monomer at the surface of the film.
