Measurements of single items in ensembles allow gaining much greater insight into the dynamics of the system. In principle, one can develop statistical models or equations of motion that allow new insights into cellular function(s) and viewing function as a transition between nonequilibrium steady states (NESS). This talk will consider the control of cell cycle of Caulobacter crecentus by way of extrinsic pulsatile chemical perturbations and measurements of the division times of individual cells in the ensemble for ~100 generations. Different formulations of reductionist gene network models will be presented that allow understanding the NESS dynamics.
