Byproducts of agricultural crop production, such as corn stover, are potential renewable sources of non-fossil carbon that can be employed for the thermochemical production of synthetic fuels including methane and Fischer-Tropsch liquids. Partial gasification using the ChemChar co-current flow process has been studied to convert bulky crop byproduct biomass to a compact dry carbonaceous material that can be transported economically to synthetic fuel production facilities. The process generates a synthesis gas byproduct that can be used as a fuel, for example, to power a gas turbine to generate electricity. Sewage sludge is also readily gasified and dried by the process and it is applicable to livestock production wastes such as cattle manure.
