The deformation micromechanics of all-cellulose composites is presented. All-cellulose composites are produced using cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) generated from both cotton and tunicate sources. These nanowhiskers are then incorporated into a cellulose matrix, derived by dissolving cotton and microcrystalline cellulose in two different solvent systems; namely LiCl/DMAc and NaOH/urea. Using a Raman spectroscopy technique, the interfaces between the CNWs and the matrix materials are followed, by measuring a shift in the Raman peaks located at 1095 cm-1 and 895 cm-1, corresponding to CNWs/matrix and matrix only components of the nanocomposites respectively. The orientation of the CNWs in the composites are also analysed by using the intensities of the Raman bands.
