It is a little known fact that bacteria recycle their cell wall.  This happens during normal growth, as well as in response to damage, as in exposure to antibiotics. The process begins on the cell surface, a key metabolite is internalized to allow the completion of the event within the cytoplasm. I will talk about the process of degradation of cell wall and the early cytoplasmic steps from both mechanistic and structural perspectives.
