Copper in freshwater and saltwater has been known to be beneficial in the elimination of unwanted parasites on fish but is known to be toxic when the concentrations are too high. Iron on the other hand is beneficial to marcoalgae and microalgae growth but concentrations of iron, as hypothesized, would change based on the time of season and the extent of aquatic plant growth. The purpose of this research was to test and understand how seasonal change affects the concentration of copper and iron in freshwater, and these concentrations were compared to those in a controlled saltwater fish tank. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy was used to determine the metal concentrations from different water sources in the Dubuque, Iowa area.
