The gel portion of the leaves of Aloe striata, is found to be biologically active in non-traditional medicine.  A compound was isolated from the leaf gel that inhibits the germination of Candida albicans and causes morphologic aberrations in the fungi F. oxysporum and P. variotii.  The antifungal compound was successfully separated from the leaf gel using a combination of chromatographic techniques.  Several techniques were used to determine the identity of this biologically active compound, including LC/MS, IR, 1H and 13C NMR.  Isolation and identification of this compound has important applications in the fields of pharmacology and microbiology.
