It is the goal of this study to demonstrate a method that combines high resolution neurochemical measurements of brain catecholamine release in the striatum with high-resolution, quantitative operant behavioral measurements.  Male Sprague Dawley rats were trained within a differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL) behavioral paradigm. The use of implanted, carbon-fiber fused silca electrodes (~7�m exposed carbon fiber tip) and fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), allowed for low catecholamine concentration detection at high temporal resolution. Behavioral patterns were recorded by an operant force plate actometer through the use of force transducers with a resolution of 100 milliseconds.  FSCV and actometer data were continuously collected throughout one hour sessions. A decrease in catecholamine concentration was detected prior to initiation of the rat's movement to the lever. Neurotransmitter levels returned to those of the resting state between the behavior initiation and before lever-pressing. Similar findings were previously observed within the nucleus accumbens.
