The alpha acids from three varieties of hops were extracted using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and quantified using HPLC. The recoveries obtained with this methodology were compared with the recoveries obtained using the widely accepted method of the American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC). Using an optimized 5:1 solvent ratio of ethyl ether:methanol, total alpha acid recoveries using ASE ranged from 94.7% to 107% in comparison to the ASBC methodology, but with considerable time savings due to the automation and efficiency of the ASE instrumentation.
