Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a combination of capillary electrophoresis and HPLC. The separation is based on chromatography but the mobile phase flow is based on  electroosmosis rather than pressure. We prepare porous polymer monoliths (PPMs) in fused silica capillaries to use as the stationary phase. These organic polymers form hydrophobic phases with a sponge-like architecture quite distinct from traditional particle based phases. These new materials and separation strategies have not been fully characterized. We explore fundamental aspects of separations using these systems and materials. Test analytes have been chosen with which to probe the relationship of diffusion and retention. We have also undertaken thermodynamic studies to determine the enthalpy and entropy of partitioning. By comparing results for PPMs and CEC with traditional phases and HPLC, we will better understand both the traditional and new approaches. This poster will describe our most recent thermodynamic results for a lauryl acrylate polymer system.
