Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a combination of HPLC and capillary electrophoresis. The technique utilizes a chromatographic stationary phase, but rather than high pressure, electroosmosis is the driving force. We prepare porous polymer monoliths (PPMs) in fused silica capillaries to serve as stationary phases. PPMs are structurally very different from traditional particle based phases and have not been well characterized. The purpose of this study was to better understand the fundamental mechanisms of separation obtained with these unique phases in this novel separation system. Polymers based on lauryl acrylate and analytes with retention factors ranging from 0.1 to 13.1 were chosen to examine the relationship between retention and diffusion. Diffusion coefficients were measured by the stopped flow method. Plots relating diffusion and retention for showed behavior different from that usually obtained with traditional phases in HPLC modes.
