It is often useful in forensic laboratories to be able to extract and identify drugs from body fluids. Urine is the most frequently readily available fluid. In this study, different barbiturates will be extracted from urine samples using Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE). This method allows separation of unwanted materials from the samples. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) will then be used to detect which barbiturates are present in the extracted material. Drug standards will be used to validate the SFE and GC-MS methods. Pentobarbital and Phenobarbital will be used as the initial representative drugs of interest.
