Aloe Vera is a plant with many biological effects including soothing burns.  However, one property of Aloe that has not been studied well is what chemicals cause its antibacterial effects.  This study focuses on determining what kinds of compounds in aloe are responsible for this effect in E. coli and S. epidermis.  The components of reconstituted aloe powder (from aloe juice) were separated based on polarity using organic solvent extraction.  The components in the extraction solutions were further separated using Nominal Molecular Weight Filters (3K, 10K and 50K NMWL).  The weight-separated samples of both the polar and nonpolar solutions were then tested for antibacterial effects using the Kirby-Bauer (disc diffusion) technique.
