Organo-arsenic compounds Roxarsone and p-Arsanilic acid have been added to poultry and swine feed to prevent disease and promote growth. The potential toxicity of these compounds demands a method for analysis. This research uses High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to separate the compounds followed by collection as they exit the HPLC column. The separated substances are then introduced into an atomic absorption graphite furnace for quantitative determination. A mobile phase of 70% deionized water, 28% methanol, and 2% acetic acid yielded retention times of 2.3 minutes (p-Arsanilic acid) and 4.0 minutes (Roxarsone). The method was tested by spiking filters that are used to collect the compounds from contaminated air with amounts corresponding to Permissible Exposure Limits. Following desorption of the filters with methanol, solutions were analyzed with the hyphenated technique. Results will be compared to conditions set by The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for an analytical method.
