Studies of the water accommodated fractions (WAFs) of artificially and field weathered MC252 oils have been performed with special emphasis on chemistry and acute biological effects (Microtox�, algae (Skeletonema costatum), and copepods (Acartcia tonsa)). Preparation of low-energy WAF has been performed under controlled conditions following the CROSERF guidelines with an oil-to-water ratio of 1 to 10000 (100 mg oil/L). The objective has been to characterize the chemical composition and acute toxicity of different weathering stages of the WAFs from MC252 oil. Artificially weathered oil residues from 150 �C+ (representing surfacing oil) to 275 �C+ (representing approximately 3 days at sea), have been used in preparing the WAFs. The chemical characterization of the WAFs and their toxicity will be correlated to field data from the Deepwater Horizon accident.
