Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation on metallic nanostructures can greatly increase the rate of non-radiative decay of excited conduction electrons, resulting in an increase of  the local temperature of nanostructure asperities. Until now, directly measuring the local temperature change caused by SPR still remains as a challenge to the nanoscience community. Herein, we demonstrate that a chemical thermometry technique called thermally-induced polymerization can be used to measure the temperature change on the surface of nanostructures upon the excitation of the localized SPR. This temperature change can be understood as a function of the wavelength, power, and duration of the irradiation. Knowledge of the SPR-induced temperature change on the surfaces of nanostructures will facilitate the use of nanostructures in various desired chemical reactions.
