The unique properties of metallic nanoparticles are key to their increasing prevalence in biomedical imaging and diagnostics. The high saturation magnetization of Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles, which results in their high transverse relaxivity, makes these materials particularly effective as MRI contrast agents. The characteristic plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles render them powerful tools in dark field microscopy. The combination of these two materials in a single nanocomposite, a magnetoplasmonic assembly, is particularly appealing given the complementarities in terms of resolution and 3-D imaging capabilities of the dark field and MR imaging techniques. Similarly, novel magnetoluminescent agents, particularly those with time-gating capabilities, offer powerful options for dual MRI/confocal imaging. The synthesis and characterization of such multimodal assemblies in such a way as to maximize their imaging capabilities will be discussed. Rational functionalization of these nanocomposites further enables the design of multimodal responsive imaging agents via their analyte-induced controlled self-assemblies.
