Similar to interference lithography, holographic polymerization (HP) has recently been used as a quick and efficient top-down technique to fabricate 1D, 2D and 3D defect-free nanoscale photonic structures with excellent structural control. Herein we demonstrate that HP can be used to fabricate hierarchical, functional nanostructures. To this end, block copolymer as well as polyelectrolyte was patterned into Bragg gratings. The former afforded hierarchical nanostructures ranging from a few nanometers to micron size while incorporating polyelectrolyte into HP led to controlled ion conducting path ways in the resultant holographic polyelectrolyte membranes.
